Google Hangout

Tonight I had my first successful experience with Google Hangout.  Wow!

I say first successful experience because I tried it last night too, while at work,  but it didn't seem to work.

The question is why? Why google hangout? What prompted this hangout.  

As I am very certain you are all aware I am a bit of a twitter junkie.  I love meeting and chatting with new people. I love learning and sharing with others.  One group that I spend of fair bit of time chatting with are the people I've met on #1stchat.  It's a really great group of educators and since they actually teach the grade that I teach they get it.  

Anyhow a few weeks back some of them had another hangout discussing something educational (and for what ever reason I can't remember) but I wasn't able to join (I know there was a good reason, and it would have involved me doing some serious multi tasking but for the life of me I can't remember why either).  Then this week I dug a little deeper into getting Skype to work in my classroom.  I tweeted a few classrooms which lead to the suggestion of a Google Hangout.  One classroom teacher's suggestion of meeting in Google Hangout  grew to six classes meeting together at the same time in Google Hangout.  The idea was born that we (our students in particular) were going to share their writing with one another  through Google Hangout.

Last night my #1stchat twitter friend Jill, @jaxbeachteach from Florida, said she'd be on line so that I could give Google Hangout a try.  I wanted to try it at work because I wasn't sure if it would work or not and I didn't want to get my students all excited about meeting and chatting with other students from around North America to find out that we couldn't.  

As it turned out it didn't work at school.  I'm still not exactly sure why but I think it may be a band with issue (what ever that means).  This is something I will investigate further.  It could have also been something with Google Hangout because my friend in Florida couldn't really make it work with me either.

Anyhow, this evening the teachers decided that it would be a good idea to try the hangout first to plan for the official (with our classes) hangout scheduled for Friday morning.  We scheduled to meet at 9:00 pm EST.  Although I couldn't make it on time I did make it while they were all still there.  

Now imagine, these are people I have never met (other than reading their blogs, sharing the odd e-mail, or seeing their twitter profile) but I have had countless conversations with them.  As soon as I logged on to Google Hangout they were all there, staring at me!  It was the first time I had ever see any of them "live". Yes, I know not really live but I heard their voices and I saw them talk. At first it was a bit over whelming, but it quickly became normal.

Obviously I asked the silly questions like,  "why are some of us so small and why is one person so big?" Like they do on twitter they answered my questions - when you talk your picture gets bigger and it  moves to the top centre box.

Anyhow the conversation went back and forth as we (well really they since I don't think I'll be able to join them) made a plan for Friday.  Wow, those are lucky children.  On Friday five classes from around North America are going to get together to listen and comment on one of the classes students' writing.  

We also talked about having Jill lead a lesson for all the classes since she spent the last ten years as a educational coach.  We talked about a lot of other things too, some serious, some certainly not so series.  Remember we all teach grade one, which means we all are aware of the laughs we get from our students every day. 

Anyhow it was a really positive experience.  When it was all over we tweeted one another thanking each other for the hangout.  Christine, @cyarzy, was smart enough to take a screen shot of our hangout which she said was okay for me to use on this post.  So here it is!

My question is, have you ever used Google Hangout?  What potential do you see for its use?  And yes, I will look into why it didn't work at my school, and how I may (if possible) get it to work.  I mean really, can you imagine seven grade one classes learning and sharing together!

Utilizing Technology in Grade One

A lot has changed in my classroom since discovering Twitter for educational purposes in July 2011.  Sometimes I think my staff thinks I'm nuts because I've made so many changes to my teaching this year.  The biggest one  is the integration of meaningful technology into my teaching program.  I have gone out of my way to find it and get it into my classroom.  I've borrowed from resources available in my school district, and I've utilized what is available in my school by signing out my school's laptops and free computer lab time.  I've tried to be mindful of those that also like to use this technology (mainly the older grades).  I've also been pretty out there on Twitter sharing what I've been up to in my room and what I'd love to have in my room.  I've learned from tons of great educators teaching similar aged students in different parts of the world.  It's been quite a world wind which I don't see stopping anytime soon.

Over the weekend I was thinking about ways that this immersion of technology has changed the way my students are learning.  We still do a lot with out technology, but I feel technology has helped me better meet the needs of my students.

Take for example my selective mute.  She is a brilliant young lady but her anxieties are so challenging for her that she is unable to speak or write at school.  However blogging has given her a voice.  She has tons to say to us and is able to communicate through the use of her individual blog.  While she will not communicate at school it is very clear by her blogging that she has a lot to say.  Without technology I would not have this window into her thoughts.

Then there's my newest student who arrived in Canada at the beginning of January.  He joined my classroom with very little English.  He did not know his letters and other than copying his name he couldn't write very much either.  However in the short time that he's been in my class we've been able to utilize two great iPad apps - Pocket Phonic and Word Wizard and he is now able to write simple sentences on his individual blog.

These are just two examples of how technology is having a positive impact on my students' learning.  There are many others.

Here is a little video showing some of the ways technology is changing the way I teach and my students learn.  I do want to be clear that technology does not replace good practices already in place.

Let's Talk About Writing

Yesterday morning on Twitter Aviva Dunsiger and I had a very professional conversation about teaching writing.  It started because as much as I like the idea of a Bump It Up Wall, I struggle with it too.  For me I feel my most important duty as a grade one teacher teaching writing is to teach my students how to become writers, authentic writers.  I put more focus on making them life long writers, than working through the requirements of our curriculum.  It is not to say that I don’t teach our required curriculum.  That simply is not true.  However I do choose very deliberately how I will cover the government curriculum while keeping my focus on creating authentic writers.  For me the curriculum per say is just a requirement of my government, but the need to help my students become authentic life long writers is my real purpose as their teacher.

This concerned Aviva a lot because it was difficult for her to see how I was meeting my curriculum requirements.  How was I getting data? How did I know if my students got it?  These are all very fair questions to ask.  This blog is designed to look at how I meet the different curriculum requirements while keeping my goal of creating authentic life long writers at the forefront. In my twenty years of teaching I have learned that when you foster a classroom that allows children to explore their own interests they do just that.  But they are curious learners, and when you get excited about a new form of writing, they are curious to give it a try too.   

In British Columbia, at the grade one level, there are ten main Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for  writing. They can be found hereThe writing requirements start on page 19 and are labelled C1-C10. 

Before I start talking about how I meet each specific PLO I should tell you about some of the ways I teach writing in my classroom.  To begin with my students journal first thing in the morning, three days a week.  I do not assign them a topic but have specifically chosen Monday and Friday as journalling days because they usually have something to share about their weekend, or about their school week.  Tuesday's writing is tougher for some but I have plenty of places to find ideas to write about or a quick chat with a friend can help too.  What's important is that they come up with the final decision on what they are going to write about.  For some of my students they would prefer to blog, which is a completely acceptable choice at this time. Choice in both choosing a topic, and choosing the means to journal is very important in meeting my goal of creating authentic writers.

While they are doing their planners, changing their home reading books, and practicing their word work I am busy conferencing with as many as I am able during this time.  Usually I can managed three conferences, sometimes more, sometimes less.  When I fall behind I'll conference with students while they are journal writing too but I try not to do that too often.

During one on one conferences we talk about strengths, and areas for improvement.  We set goals, or work on ways to continue to improve goals we are working on.  In the second term I introduced an editing checklist that my students are encourage to use. Sometimes I take the lead in the conferences but just as often the students take the lead.  They are pretty good at telling me what they are good at doing, and what they would like to get better at.  But it really does depend on the student.  We always review goals, and when necessary set new ones.  It's a really focussed time.  The teaching is very specific to each student's needs.  I try to record information discussed during these conferences either right in their journals, or in their writing conference books.  Sometimes though I must admit that I do forget to document our discussions.  This is something I need to get better at.  But these conferences happen, and happen regularly and they are a vital part of my writing program.

Most mornings we choose a special person.  As a class we do a shared piece of writing that is about the special person.  During this time I model writing  for my students.  Each round of "special person" has a different writing focus.  I have used the special person story to teach my students about  writing multiple sentences on a topic, adding details to sentences, setting goals, writing name poetry, and using language of sequence. We've covered mechanics like capital letters, punctuation,  and simple and complex sentences.  While the children think that we are just writing fun stories about our classmates, each round of stories has a purpose in my writing program.

Most days we have a writing block after recess.  It typically starts with a mentor text, followed by a mini lesson.  No More I’m Done by Jennifer Jacobson  has been my go to book for mentor text and mini lesson ideas.  Some days there isn't a mentor text, but just a quick review of a strategy previously taught.  I then hand out any of their writing that I have from the previous day.  Before my students head off to write they are given time to turn and talk with one another and share what they are going to write about for the day.  Some are in the middle of writing multi day stories, reports, or comic strips while others prefer to start something new each day.  This talk time is important to get them ready to write.  I need to make it perfectly clear that I do not tell them what to write. Once everyone is ready to write they head to their desired spot to write.  As you can see by this classroom blog post and this classroom blog post, they write where ever they would like in the classroom using what ever tools are available to them.  Once again student choice is key

When my students are writing I continue to conference.  While conferencing I often have a few students that are still working near/with me on their writing. They know that my conferences are my number one priority during this time, but I also know for some of them just sitting near me helps them stay focussed on their writing.  I love my rainbow table. It's perfect for this.

At the end of writing time we meet back as a group for writer's share.  I must admit this doesn't happen as often as I'd like it to and I need to find a better way to make sure it happens.  But when it does happen my students volunteer to share their writing with the class.  I keep a list of who shares, and when I have a few left that haven't shared I gently remind/encourage/tell them that they will be sharing. As a class we provide feedback, feedback that is specific.  I encourage my students to use words like "I like the way you..." or "I noticed that you...".  I model too of course.  At times have used the inside outside circle strategy so that everyone can share their writing. I think I need to do that more often.

On Thursdays we head to the computer lab for blogging or story writing  As you've probably figured out I have two computers and one iPad in my classroom that my kids can write on.  I usually have more kids wanting to write digitally, than places for them to write so having lab time during my writing time ensures that all my students can get on line to write at least once a week.  Sometimes I have kids who don't want to write or create using Storybird so they add comments to blogs instead. It's funny actually because they will say that they don't want to write but they want to comment.  You'd think they'd figure out that commenting IS writing.  I certainly won't be the one to tell them.  

I am lucky at my school to have access to 18 MacBook laptops.  I book them often too (when the intermediate teachers aren't using them for projects).  My students love writing on the laptops and I love being able to provide the opportunity to use them.  It's a win win for all involved.
Friday mornings, and more frequently during our Quad Blogging we read and comment on other classrooms blogs.  During this time my students help me compose comments to leave on other blogs.  They tell me what to write.  We use this time to practice our editing skills too.  They are great at finding my typos and telling me how to correct them.  To them they are just writing comments, but my goal here is to give them the opportunity to write for a purpose, reread their work looking for errors, and correct those errors.  Because we are regularly commenting on blogs, we are regularly editing as a class,  and in turn they are better at editing their own work.  
We write in other areas of our day, but my focus then is typically more on the content I'm trying to teach then the mechanics of their writing.  This is not to say that I don't remind them of what good writing looks like but content is the goal during this time.

Now that you know a little bit about how I cover writing I'll try to show you how I meet my required curriculum.
I have cut and pasted the ministries ten PLOs here, and put them in bold type.  So here goes…
C1     It is expected that students will create straightforward personal writing and representations that express simple ideas, feelings, likes, and dislikes, featuring
- ideas represented through words, sentences, and images that connect to a topic
developing sentence fluency by using simple sentences that relate to each other
- developing word choice by attempting to use descriptive words and interesting details
- developing voice by showing some evidence of individuality
- an organization that follows a form or text presented or modelled by the teacher, such
  as a list, card, or letter

I spend a lot of first term focusing on strategies to help my students organize and expand their writing. One resource I’ve relied heavily on this year is No More I’m Done by Jennifer Jacobson.  I love the mini lessons she uses for the first month of writing. For me though those lessons were more of a first term focus than first month focus.  We looked at writing from artifacts, writing from memory, adding meaningful detail to writing, focusing on one specific topic using the binocular strategy, and writing from webs.  By teaching these strategies in term one, and re visiting them over, and over, and over again my students were able to demonstrate competencies for this required PLO.  I saw proof of this in their three day a week journal writing, their personal blogs, and their free choice writing.  I also had several 1-1 conferences with my students throughout term one where we were able to discuss this requirement.  I feel very confident that I have adequately covered this PLO, and it is one that we continue to cover all year long.

C2   It is expected that students will create straightforward informational writing and representations, using prompts to elicit ideas and knowledge, featuring
–   ideas represented through words, sentences, and images that connect to a topic
–   developing sentence fluency by using simple sentences, patterns, labels, and captions
–   developing word choice by beginning to use content-specific vocabulary and some detail
–   developing voice by showing how they think and feel about a topic
     an organization that follows a form modelled by the teacher, such as a list, web, chart, cluster, or other graphic organizer

This PLO is introduced in term three through our science focus of plants and animals.  I have set the stage for this writing by focussing exclusively on non-fiction text during our guided reading sessions. My students are now very familiar with different aspects of non fiction text so when they start writing non fiction I feel confident that they will be successful.  This non fiction writing will be integrated into our science blocks although from past experience I feel pretty confident that my students will start demonstrating their knowledge of non fiction writing during their free writing time too.

C3   It is expected that students will create imaginative writing and representations, often modelled on those they have read, heard, or viewed, featuring
       - ideas represented through sentences and images that generally connect to a topic
- developing sentence fluency by using simple sentences, dialogue, phrases, and poetic language
- developing word choice by attempting to use new and descriptive words
developing voice by showing some evidence of individuality
- an organization that generally follows a form presented or modelled
by the teacher; stories include a beginning, middle, and end

During our Fairy Tale unit in January we talked a lot about story features, and about Fairy Tales in particular.  We thought about different endings, and what secrets the author uses to keep us wanting to read more.  We read different versions of the same  story and compared and contrasted how they were similar and different.  It is at this time of the year that my students are encouraged to write their own stories, and you know what, they do! During free write they are writing their own version of stories that they have read or heard.  If someone chooses not to we conference about how I need to see that they can write a story.  More often than not this isn’t necessary.  So as far as my students are concerned they are writing creative stories because that’s what they want to do, not because I’m telling them to.  It’s actually quite sneaky.

The next three PLOs all focus around using strategies for a variety t purposes and I will speak to each of these together. 

C4   It is expected that students will use strategies before writing and representing, including
- setting a purpose
- identifying an audience
- participating in developing class-generated criteria
- generating, selecting, and organizing ideas from home and/or school experiences

C5   It is expected that students will use strategies during writing and representing to express thoughts in written and visual form (e.g., looking at picture books and student writing samples as models)

C6   It is expected that students will use a strategy after writing and representing to improve their work (e.g., sharing their written work and representations, checking for completeness, adding details)

If you reread how I described my writing program it should be pretty obvious that I cover all three of these PLOs on a regular basis.  I constantly teach a variety of writing strategies, I meet regularly with my students to discuss their progress, and I help them set new goals for improvement.  These goals are specific to the needs of each student.  I look for their use of strategies in their writing. When I don't see what I'm looking for we talk about it, I reteach it, and I let them know that I'm looking to see it.  That's the beauty of having one on one conferences with my students.  We can use our time together to meet needs that need to be met.  Every student in my class gets there one on one time with me.

C7    It is expected that students will use writing and representing to express personal responses and likes or dislikes about experiences or texts

My students' writing often contains personal opinions on a specific topic.  In addition frequently during content areas my students have to respond to what we are doing or learning.  I must admit we do spend a lot of time talking about likes and dislikes and perhaps we could write about them more often.  Thankfully I still have another term to ensure that this PLO is met successfully.

C8       It is expected that students use writing and representing to extend their thinking.

This writing is a very specific type of writing and does need to follow a specific lesson.  We do a TON of talking around extending thinking with the think, pair, share strategy.  We do write this too, and often we do it during a reading block ( to extend thinking regarding a reading concept) or a socials or science block.  This is very important writing, so much so that we have used our "writing block" specifically for this type of writing.  And yes, while I know my goal of our daily writing block is to create authentic writers, sometimes the curriculum is the main focus of my students' writing.  

C9       It is expected that students will reflect on their writing and representing to identify their strengths and to discuss attributes of good writers and representers

This PLO is easily met during 1:1 writing conferences. It also met when we "blog around the world".  We look at writing samples, we talk about what we like about them.  We do a ton of turn and talk focussing on this concept.  But a lot of the time this PLO is met during conferencing.  I can't stress enough how powerful these conferences are.  They provide a clear picture of what my students are thinking.

C10  It is expected that students will use some features and conventions of language to express meaning in their writing and representing, including
-  complete simple sentences
-  “s” to form plural of familiar words
-  capital letters at the beginning of people’s names and of sentences, and capitalize the pronoun “I”
-  a period to mark the end 
of a sentence
-  words from their oral language vocabulary as well as less familiar word from class-displayed lists
-  knowledge of consonant and short vowel sounds to spell phonically regular  one-syllable words
-  spelling phonically irregular high-frequency words from memory attempting to spell unknown words through phonic knowledge and skills and visual memory
- legible printing from left to right of all uppercase and lowercase letters
- appropriate spacing between letters and words

The conventions side of writing is covered all the time.  My students know that if their work is hard to read, it is hard to  understand, and if it is hard to understand they lose their voice.   They work hard to master a large range of writing conventions and when they get stumped by one, I'm there to help them master it.  By do means does this mean that my students are perfect writers, but they do know what they need to do to make them better writers.  This, like so many of the other PLOs mandated by my provincial government, is taught and retaught all the time.

So is my writing program perfect?  Certainly not.  I still have things I struggle with and I know there are many things I could improve.  Which brings me back to the Bump It Up Wall that Aviva talks about.  I love the idea behind that wall and I think for many of my students it would be a fantastic tool to help them improve their writing.  But this year I have another group of students that I worry about, and specifically I worry about how the wall would affect them.  In other years that Bump It Up Wall would be a perfect tool to add to my room, but this year my gut is telling me (based on what I know about my students) that it isn't the time for this. Who knows though. When my class starts writing non fiction it may be something I (or my student teacher) reconsiders.

I also worry about my four ELL students that receive pull out support.  They are not in my classroom during our morning journal time. They aren't getting as much writing as I'd like them to get and I need to find a way to fix that too.

I also struggle with having my students want to publish their work.  Most just want to write, and write, and write.  Few want to create published copies of their work - published can take on many forms.  Mind you they do spend a lot of time (and focus) on their initial drafts.  It is something I'm looking at tweaking and perhaps it is a goal for term three.  At this stage in the year I know my students are ready for this next step.

When Things Get Quiet - Looking for Positives in Not So Positive Times

If you've been following this blog you'll know that when things get quiet, it's because I'm struggling with some not so great stuff with my job. Lately it's been the negotiations or more specifically the lack of negotiations between the British Columbia Teacher's Federation (BCTF) and my provincial government.  Things went from bad to ugly in a short period of time.  While it has upset me a lot, this blog hasn't been created to share my political views.  It does however need to be acknowledged that it has affected me.  So as I struggle with a challenging time in BC Public Education I need to find the good that's around me.

Professionally the most important good around me are my students.  I can't express enough how pleased I am with the effort they have put forth this year.  They continue to amaze me with what they are learning.  Several of my students are learning English as an additional language.  For many learning to read and write independently hasn't been easy.  But despite facing challenges ( and for some daily challenges)  they continue to impress me with how hard they work, and how keen they are to figure things out.

I think of one student in particular who joined my classroom just before Christmas barely writing one sentence in her journal.  She is now writing an entire page, with interesting details.  She is keen to share her thinking and stories.  And the best part is she's not the only one like this.  Pretty much my entire class is like this - doing the very best they can.  As their teacher I can't ask for any thing more.

I am also really pleased with the support I've had from the families of my students.  Our biweekly community read continues to be a huge success and time after time it's such a positive experience for everyone involved.  I've received several kind notes from my students' parents.  I've had a lot of positive feedback from the parents of my students.  In this difficult time of job action it's great to know that I've really made an effort to keep the lines of communication between the home and school open, and that most of my students' parents have taken advantage of that.

My class blog has also been another source of happiness.  We have had over 10,000 hits since it was created in August and average about 500 hits a week.  It's been a lot of fun (and work) for me to keep it up to date but I think it will be an incredible keep sake for my students.  It's also a great communication tool for those parents that are unable to come into our classroom. They have a window into it via the blog.  I love that we have visitors from all over the world, and I love that many are commenting on it too.  (That's a request for you to comment on it too!)

My students' blogs also continue to make me smile.  We've had a lot of fun trying to embed different items into them and so they are slowly moving away from just a place to write, and are moving more towards becoming an authentic digital portfolio of their learning.  I still love what they are writing though and I love how completely independent they have become with blogging.  They are keen writers, many writing from home on a regular basis.  I love that!

Beyond my classroom I am really pleased with the people in my Professional Learning Network.  I can't tell you how many back channel conversations I've had on Twitter with some really incredible educators.  There are several of them that have pushed my learning, way beyond where I ever could have imagined going.  And I keep meeting more amazing educators.  Twitter has, by far, been the best thing that has happened to me professionally.  I am very thankful for that.

I'm also happy about the exciting projects I've been involved with.  To begin with my class and I are about to start our fourth and final week of Quad Blogging.  Obviously with job action this week won't be as successful as the past three but it will be fun visiting international blogs.  The primary blog we were visiting this week had an alien rocket land on its school grounds and the children were doing some investigating.  It was quite exciting for my students to check back each day to learn what our blogging friends had discovered.

I've also enrolled my class in a Flat Classroom K-2 Pilot Project - Building Bridges.  The aim of this project is to have classrooms around the world collaborate together to create a project with hopes that we will learn and share with one another.  Our group will be exploring the theme a View From Our Window as well as Making a Meal.  We will be working with students from the USA, and Hong Kong.

There is yet another project that we will be involved with but it's not official yet so I'm not able to share it publicly.  Let's just say things are going to change in our classroom, and only for the better.  It will be an incredible opportunity for me and my students.  Don't worry though when it is finalized I will share.

And of course there is Spring Break.  It begins in a little over a week and after all the stress of job action it will be a much welcomed break.  Plus I have very exciting adventure planned. It is something to look forward to.
